The history of tennis as an Olympic sport goes back to the first edition of the modern Olympic Games in 1896. Athens, the site of these first Games, crowned the Irishman John Boland as the first Olympic tennis champion. After the inclusion of women's sport in the 1900 Paris Games, the English tennis player Charlotte Cooper was proclaimed the first woman to win an Olympic gold.
