The 25th of July is a date marked on the calendar of all Barcelona residents. The 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games Opening Ceremony positioned the city on a world map. It showed tradition, culture, art, architecture, creativity and organizational capacity. This moment was the most visible, but for 4 years the city worked for the Cultural Olympiad consisted of a four-year programme of cultural initiatives in the city, which culminated in the 1992 Olympic Arts Festival. The main objective of the Cultural Olympiad was to promote Barcelona’s artistic heritage and, for four years, to turn it into a cultural centre of maximum international promotion. The Olympic ideals of peace, dialogue, fraternity and cultural exchange were at the heart of the Cultural Olympiad. This programme, in addition to including cultural events, was also intended to promote the international dissemination of Barcelona and encourage dialogue among the countries who were to take part in the 1992 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Through this exhibition, and on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the 1992 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Barcelona Olympic Foundation seeks to pay tribute to the Cultural Olympiad and to all the people who took part in it.
