The rings of ‘l’Àngel Daurat’, donated to the Olympic Museum

Two sets of original rings with ropes from the Blume Gymnasium, and used by Joaquin Blume, leader of the Spanish artistic gymnastics, have been added to the Joan Antoni Samaranch Olympic and Sport Museum collection.

Blume, absolute champion of Spain in 1949, retained the title for ten consecutive years. He also won the European Championship in 1957, the individual all-around competition, and dominated the three gymnastics competencies: parallel, vaulting horse and rings. Born in Barcelona, he is remembered for his perfect execution of the Christ (remaining still with the arms outstretched in a cross), passing into history as the inventor, although in reality he was not.

Joaquin Blume’s career was cut short in 1959 when the plane he was traveling in crashed; he died at the age of 25.

The rings, donated to the Museum by the Cencerrado family, were previously held in the Espai Pioners.
